MTM's T500 conversion for the T5 transforms the Transporter into an autobahn stormer. THE CONCEPT of a Q-car is not a new one. Over the years, I have driven many normal-looking cars with big engine transplants, or high-performance tuning modifications, that have thoroughly creamed the egos of many so-called performance car drivers. But one thing I have learned along the way is that the more unlikely-looking the vehicle, the more potential fun there is to be had and today saw a prime example. I was in a VW T5 van on the autobahn, heading north past Ingolstadt and I had just flashed the driver of an Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI which was playing the role of mobile chicane in the overtaking lane at 150 kph. The Audi's driver quite obviously looked in his mirror and decided that the T5 was probably only a 2.0-litre TDI, and therefore so close to its top speed that it didn't matter. But after receiving a couple more flashes over the next two kilometres, he finally did what many of these stubborn drivers do and moved over to the middle lane, and then accelerated hard to thwart my attempt at passing him...
