As well as very sprightly performance, the 160 PS 1.8 TSI provides fuel economy almost as good as a diesel. WE'VE PREVIOUSLY only road-tested the diesel-powered models from the new Passat range, the 1.6 TDI Saloon and 2.0 TDI Estate. Despite its higher price, diesel is still the preferred option for most high-mileage users and Volkswagen's own figures suggest that almost 80 per cent of Passats, mostly TDIs, will be purchased by fleet buyers, with the 140 PS 2.0 TDI SE alone accounting for about 25 per cent of total sales.
