In the second part of this series about one of the smallest of the Volkswagen Group's current engines, Paul Harris looks at the oil supply system and the way in which the turbocharger is controlled. BECAUSE THIS engine has only one camshaft, and the main and big-end bearings are relatively small, it has a significantly lower oil requirement than other Volkswagen engines. This permits a smaller pump to be used, as the work it has to do is only about 50 per cent of the closed-loop pumps in other engines. The correct oil pressure is maintained by a pressure control valve which is integrated into the pump itself.
