ONE OF THE most common modifications to any car is to fit a new set of wheels, and there's no doubt that a well-chosen set of alloys can totally transform its appearance, improve handling, and even accommodate a bigger set of brakes. Get it wrong, though, and you could end up lumbered with a car which at worst not only looks ridiculous but could be downright dangerous, or at best one which twitches and jolts over every bump in the road. Wheels and tyres are not just round, shiny and black - they are a key component of the car and any changes need to be carefully considered. As far as styling is concerned, the sky is the limit. Once there were only a few basic types of alloy wheel; nowadays there are literally thousands of different designs on the market. You only have to wander round the Show 'n' Shine or club display area at a major event like GTi International or Edition 38 to see the plethora of different types and styles of wheel in use.
