There's more than ￡30,000 difference in price between these two Phaetons, but both offer extremely high levels of performance, comfort and equipment... THE DEVELOPMENT and production of the Phaeton is one of the most intriguing stories in the history of the automobile. Conceived when Ferdinand Piech was in day-to-day control of the Volkswagen Group, it was to be a car which would challenge the Mercedes-Benz S-Class head on. No-one could doubt the technical expertise which went into its development and a special factory was built in Dresden to assemble it. Although it has since been withdrawn from the American market, sales in Germany are climbing gradually and, at present, about 35 Phaetons are being built at Dresden each day.
