WE SAW LAST month how Volkswagen do Brasil was initially built on the solid basis of European air-cooled vehicles - Beetles, Transporters, Karmann Ghias, and Type 3s. Later on, during the 1970s, several interesting 'Brazil only' cars were developed and sold with considerable success, the best examples being the Brasilia hatchback, the SP sports models and the Variant II estate. The Brazilian arm of the Volkswagen concern was running well, selling cars not only on the home market, but also to many countries in South America and later to Africa and other continents.
