Just like the original, the New Beetle tended to provoke love it or hate it' reactions. Peter Noad tries to give an objective view. THE NEW BEETLE started life as a concept car dreamt up by Volkswagen's Design Centre in California. Known as Concept 1, it was first exhibited at the Detroit Motor Show in 1994 where reaction from the public and media was very enthusiastic and it was described as 'the star of the show'. Volkswagen said: 'Concept 1 aims to show how modern technology can be blended with the heritage of the Beetle.' At that time it was based on the Polo platform, and its compact dimensions (by US standards) were said to make it a practical town car.
