YET AGAIN, Volkswagen has confused us with the terms it uses to describe different models. The Passat CC has become, simply, the CC. Unlike Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, all of whom use, to a large extent, numbers rather than words to describe their different models, Volkswagen is firmly in the Opel and Ford camp, with names for its various vehicles. Therein lies the danger. You can't misinterpret terms like A8 or 300 SL, but, as soon as you choose a name, the criticism seems to build up. Do you remember the fuss which greeted the launch of the Phaeton? I have always thought it an excellent name for a big, prestigious car, harking back to the imposing carriages of the past, but a great many commentators questioned what it meant and why it had been selected.
