A simple carbon sorbent process developed at ADA-ES (8100 South Park Way, B-2, Littleton, CO 80120; Tel: 303/734-1727, Fax: 303/734-0330) can remove more mercury from large coal plants burning subbituminous coal and using electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) even when less carbon is used, according to the company. About 90 percent of all U.S. coal plants use ESPs for collecting fine particulate and fly ash. The control of mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants is an issue in several bills before Congress. The states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Wisconsin have all announced plans to regulate mercury within the next few years, and several utilities intend to install mercury controls by 2006.
