BANKING ON LIFE: A Talk with Donna Oakley, CVT, VTS (ECC)

Since its creation in 1985, the Penn Animal Blood Bank (PABB) at the University of Pennsylvania has received blood donations from approximately 4,500 pets. Transfusion medicine, a relatively new specialty in the veterinary field, has garnered so muchattention in large part due to the efforts of PABB founder and director Donna Oakley, CVT, VTS (ECC), who has worked for 24 years at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (MJR-VHUP) School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia. PABB is supported through a volunteer blood donor program. Donna developed, designed, and implemented the Animal Bloodmobile - the first and only of its kind - that is the heart of the PABB.
