Continental

The end of the 1960s saw continental built tractors firmly established on the UK market even though in the case of John Deere the parent company was American owned. Deere further enhanced their appeal by the introduction in September of the 3120 mentioned in the June/July issue of VT. Steyr also extended their range with the 870 and 1090 models first shown at the 1968 Smithfield Show. The 870 had a four-cylinder direct injection diesel engine giving 70hp at 2400rpm. The syncromesh gearbox had twelve forward and six reverse gears. Two and four-wheel drive versions were available. The 1090 of 106hp also available in two or four wheel versions was by the standards of the day a big tractor and a forerunner of the race for more horse-power. The six-cylinder engine drove a twelve forward and six reverse syncromesh gearbox. Power steering and four-wheel hydraulic brakes on the four-wheel drive model, along with a front axle drive that could be engaged or disengaged on the move and under load, made it a very strong contender in the growing four-wheel drive market.
