For the Lausitz region Vattenfall Europe will also remain a strategic partner in the future, Because here Vattenfall Europe is constructing the first pilot unit world-wide for a CO{sub}2 free power plant operating in accordance with the oxy fuel method. By doing so, Vattenfall Europe - Germany's third largest energy generator with a clear focus on the conversion of lignite into electricity (Figure 3) - has taken over a pioneering role in the development of CO{sub}2-free power plants. The intention with the pilot plant is for it to function as a forerunner to a demonstration plant before a major power plant unit using this technology is then built. The construction is planned in the immediate vicinity of Vattenfall Europe's Schwarze Pumpe Power Plant. On the one hand this location is directly next to the coal deposits, thus minimising transport routes. On the other Vattenfall Europe is concentrating its energies on major follow-up projects at this location with the aim of achieving an impact on the employment opportunities here while continuing to give powerful and sustainable impulses to the local economy. Because for Vattenfall Europe, the long-term further development of its power plant parks remains a central theme. For this reason the intention here is to invest in a technology which achieves the viable conversion of coal into energy while satisfying ever higher climate protection requirements. With this pilot unit project Vattenfall Europe has now reached a stage whereby practical experience with this future-driven technology can be gained. And the Clean Coal Project in Schwarze Pumpe represents a major building block on this route.
