Administrative environmental control in Finland, and since 1995 also in the European Union, has significantly reduced emissions from Finnish energy production over the decades. The decreasing trend in sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and dust emissions is continuing with the new Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) that will replace the Large Combustion Plants Directive (LCP) in the near future. The background for this process is the European Union strategy Clean Air for Europe (CAFe). An important principle for reaching the targets is the Best Available Technology (BAT). In the European scale, the BAT technologies are collected into so-called BREF documents. The present LCP-BREF document will be updated in the near future.
