The future of energy markets: tensions between the conflicting demands of competition and polities

It clearly shows that the whole energy sector is on the move, pulled this way and that by the conflicting demands of competition and politics. The utilities face enormous pressure on costs, while customers enjoy an unprecedented measure of freedom. No one can avoid the pressure of the market, not even politicians. The latter should recognize that there is no point in hobbling an industry that has to face up to the European competition, and that fair conditions of competition are essential. If the political conditions arc right, the current tensions may ultimately turn out to he fruitful and release new energies from which all will profit.
