In over 10 years of operation, extensive experience from the high-dust and low-dust DENOX plants of the heating power plant HKW Heilbronn could be gathered. Owing to the unexpected drastic increase of the ammonia content in the high-dust DENOX and the resulting problems on its disposal, in a first step all high-dust DENOX catalyser plants were refurbished with dust blowers. Further unexpected increases of the ammonia content, however, necessitated repeated standstill periods for the exchange ofcatalysers respectively installation of an additional catalyser plant. As at first no reliable prognosis instruments were available, own instruments were developed. The prognosis of the NH{sub}3 increase with a neural network which has been speciallytrained for this purpose turned out to be especially effective. Further investigations were made in order to understand the deactivation of catalysers and to find starting points for their reactivation.
