Matra flue gas desulphurization plant - performance and project management

Matra Eromu Rt. is both the owner and operator of the Visonta and Bukkabrany opencast mines and produced approximately 7.7 million tonnes of lignite in its own lignite mines which were supplied to the company's power plant in 1999. The flue gas desulphurization (FGD) system for units 3 to 5 of the Matra power plant was inaugurated at the Visonta power plant site in Hungary on October 10, 2000. As a result of this important investment into environmental protection, the Matra lignite-fired power plant will emit about 95 % less sulphur (-96000 t/a) as well as about 80 % less particulate matter into the atmosphere. The volume of the investment into this system amounts to DM 112 million. The total cost of the modernization of the Matra power plant and opencast mining operations amounted to DM400 million.
