In this lecture, the statutory emission standards in various countries for particulates, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides for coal fired power plants have been presented, noting the leading role played by Germany. Against this background of the legal requirements, the general methodology for emissions abatement projects has been introduced, in particular pointing out that the exploi tation of combustion modification measures should have priority. However, where emission requirements are strict, the application of post-combustion flue gas cleaning is indispensable. The general state of the art of combustion modification and flue gas cleaning measures for cutting SO_2 and NO_x emissions have been described and cost figures quoted for the equipment. The various concepts are presented with reference to the example of a current project comprising the backfitting of three Chinese power stations: Dong Jiao in Beijing, Ban-shan in Zhejiang Province and Chongqing in Sichuan Province with flue gas desul-phurization plants. Depending on the fuel used and the local constraints, the individual solutions range from the use of a semi-dry process to the wet limestone process (with or without production of gypsum). In the presented concepts it is indicated that a high cost/benefit ratio is obtained with adapted technologies. Particularly, in the case of unfavourable economic parameters, this represents an effective contribution towards a reduction of environmental pollution.
