On direct reduction steel production ore-containing sands are reduced in rotary kilns under addition of coal. The process gases contain a high potential of energy that also in the steelworks Glenbrook of BHP New Zealand has remained unutilized so far. With the construction of the worldwide first plant for the thermal utilization of these process gases, about 35% of the energy requirement of the steelworks can be covered. to the Glenbrook steelworks these gases were burnt off, and the heat produced had to be quenched to an environmentally acceptable level using large amounts of fresh water. Austrian Energy as technical leader of a consortium with the Australian partner Transfield Power Systems installed four boiler units, which had been designed especially for this use.
