In the 80s, most power stations in the Federal Republic of Germany were equipped with flue-gas desulfurization plants. At that time, no-one in Germany - with the exception of the USA - had any experience with such plants. In the USA, FGD plants had been built since the early 70s. So it was only natural to take recourse to the experience gathered there. Today we know that their experience was incomplete and lacked technical maturity. Already in 1980, extensive investigations were started in order to qualify high-alloy materials for applications in flue-gas desulfurization plants. Commercial high-quality steels with MO contents <6 % quickly precipitate, and even high-alloy special steels can suffer corrosion already at average temperatures. Experience with various materials is reported.
