"Fuzzy logic" and "fuzzy control" are useful tools. The process behaviour of a refuse-fuelled combustion system cannot be described algorithmically. It is a "highly non-linear multivariable system". Nevertheless, experienced plant operators manage to control the combustion system within an acceptable range. The knowledge of these "experts" can now be translated into a control structure relatively easily using "fuzzy control". Two combustion units at the refuse incineration plant in Mannheim (MVA)are now in the third and fourth year of operation using "fuzzy control". Power costs of almost 100000 DM are saved every year through the more uniform operation of suction draughts, fresh air fans and FGD alone.
