Since 1998, MK Engineering, (part of GE Energy Services) has installed over 50 analytical sensor systems to aid boiler operators in balancing combustion and reducing emissions. A fall system consists of a row of optical monitors for furnace exit LOI and temperature, a calculated NO{sub}x production parameter derived from the signals from each burner's main flame scanner, and non-extractive CO/temperature sensor grids located in the convective pass. The systems apply patented signal processing technology to turn the 'noise' associated with combustion turbulence into usable information. At the Southwest power Station of the Municipal Utilities of Springfield, the system has been used to aid the switch to PRB coal by allowing increased automation of the burner air registers.
