Existing electricity generation capacity using solid fuels within the enlarged EU: market size and renovation options

Although coal has lost market shares to natural gas, it is foreseen that it will continue to be a key source of energy for electricity generation. Within the framework of two studies undertaken by the Center for Solid Fuels Technology and Applications (CSFTA) in Greece, the current situation of solid fuels-firing power plants in an enlarged EU was appraised. The main technical and environmental parameters as well as the foreseeable life span of the power plants were examined and the needs for renovation activities were assessed. This paper presents the results of the studies, which were carried Out in collaboration with VGB Power-Tech e.V. The studies were awarded by the European Commission Directorate General for Transport and Energy within the frame of the CARNOT Programme.
