Cold weather and snow in the north and the cool rainy season of the south have a purpose. They allow turf and other plants to rest and recuperate. A little downtime is good for you and your crew as well. Just as plants take advantage of downtime to prepare for a new growth cycle, you can turn downtime into a creative planning session to fine-tune your sports field management program. Make this a total staff project. Review the good and the bad, not to place blame or hand out compliments, but to analyze what happened and why. Each staff member, even those on the same crew, will have a slightly different perspective based on what they experienced and observed. All input is valuable—collectively you'll create a broader overview of the program and greater detail on the individual aspects of it. Sometimes the smallest details can have a big affect on saving time or money, or creating better results.
