The swimming aid consists of a forked base plate (10) on which a fin (20) is pivoted. Pivoted foot plates (12) are fitted on each fork of the base plate. The fin pivots at right angles to the base plate on a slide (22). This slide (22) is held on a torsion spring (24) in the base plate (10). The swimmer fits his feet onto the foot plates (12). By kicking the right foot and drawing up the left, the base plate swings to the left. This forces the fin to swing to the right against the cam end (31) of the base plate (10). The cam forces the fin to draw out the slide (22) against the spring (24) which tends to recentralise the fin (20) producing a forward motion which is continued by kicking each foot in turn. This method produces a swimming aid which can be used without imnatural movements by the swimmer.
