Hard and compact sot can restrict productivity of tea. In South Bank, Assam, we have encountered such problem areas in Sonari, Nazira and Golaghat tea districts. Since the tea industry is labour intensive, constant trampling of the soil by the labourers during various field operations isf the main factor for increasing soil compaction. When the soil is on heavier side the problem of compaction becomes more acute. It is very difficult to improve soil compaction under mature tea because there is no scope for loosening or deep ploughing of the soil in such a situation. Under the circumstances an attempt was made for improving the physical condition of compact soil by initiating an experiment in a commercial tea estate in Golaghat district.
