US manufacturers have long had the inside track on sales of defence equipment to South Korea, where 37,000 US troops are stationed. But Chicago-based Boeing now faces stiff competition for the South Korean military concession from France's Dassault Aviation; Russia's Sukhoi; and Eurofighter International - a consortium of firms from Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain.With the US possibly losing its traditional edge there, President George W. Bush is bent on urging South Korea to purchase F-15 jet fighters built by Boeing, Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Jan. 27. According to the Japanese daily, South Korean officials in Washington claimed that Mr. Bush would make the request of President Kim Dae-jung during his visit to South Korea, set for February 19 and 20.
