THERMAL STABILITY OF BORON-CONTAINING IMPREGNATING AGENTS INHIBITING THE OXIDATION OF ELECTRODE GRAPHITE

摘要

An effective ways to save graphitized electrodes, which are used when producing steel in electric arc furnaces, is to impregnate them with boron-containing impregnating agents in order to inhibit oxidation. When there is thermal decomposition of impregnating agents, which include boron and boric acid, water separates and a protective film - polymeric compounds of sodium and boron oxides - forms on the graphite surface. The B_2O_3-Na_2O system has been sufficiently thoroughly studied since it is the basis of borate glass [1-4]. Vitreous boric anhydride has a structure of a similar order, consisting of triangular complexes of BO_3. In these complexes, boron is found in a ternary coordination, conforming to sp~2 of the hybridization of its orbital and forms two-dimensional flat polymer networks.
