With the myriad vaccines licensed for animal use in the United States, animals can be offered a large umbrella of protection against many pathogens. For most vaccines, protection ranges from the prevention of disease if the animal is exposed to the reduction of clinical signs if the animal becomes infected. The type of vaccine protection that is offered can vary and depends on the characteristics of the infecting organism as well as the characteristics of the vaccine components. To be granted licensure, every vaccine must meet federal requirements for purity, potency, safety and efficacy.
