Casey, a 13-year-old, spayed shepherd mix, presented for evaluation of a mass on her right lateral lower lip. The mass was first noticed 5 days before presentation, and the owner thought the growth enlarged since that time. Eight months before presentation, Casey had had a splenectomy to resolve hemorrhaging in the abdomen. Biopsy samples of both the spleen and liver had been obtained during surgery and revealed benign conditions — nodular lymphocytic hyperplasia with infarction and hematoma formation and mild nodular hepatocellular hyperplasia and chronic centrilobular passive congestion, respectively.
