ORLANDO, Fla. — Experts say that it is time to redefine heartworm disease in cats, starting with a more comprehensive designation of the disease and all-inclusive guidelines for diagnosis, prevention, and management. "We need to provide compelling evidence to veterinarians that heartworm disease in cats is a big deal," said lames R. Richards, DVM, director of the Feline Health Center at Cornell University. "The need for prevention is clear," added Charles Thomas Nelson, DVM, president of the American Heartworm Society (AHS). "We must encourage the adoption of standard procedures, disseminate new information to the profession and public, and reinforce that feline heartworm disease research is progressing at a rapid rate."
