North Americans-from Canada's northland to Mexico's sundrenched shorelines-want to be assured of safe, plentiful water supplies for drinking, home use, mining, farming, industry, and a myriad of other uses. Municipalities, counties, and private organizations address this need by tapping sources in reservoirs, rivers, wells, lakes, and even oceans and seas. The water flow from raw source to treatment plant, within the treatment plant, and in the distribution system is controlled by valves. A large percentage of the valves used in these pipe systems are butterfly valves conforming to standards produced and maintained by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). These valves are commonly referred to as AWWA butterfly valves.
