Twenty years since Piper Alpha

This year has seen the twentieth anniversary of the world's worst offshore disaster, when on 6th July 1988 a large North Sea oil/gas production platform, Piper Alpha, exploded causing the deaths of 167 people. Piper Alpha had been in production since 1976 operated by Occidental Petroleum (Caledonia) Ltd, producing oil from 24 wells, connected by an oil pipeline to the island of Flotta in Orkney and by gas pipelines to two other installations.
