Development of Chip Processing Potato Cultivars With Long-Term Storage Capabilities and Cold Sweetening Resistance; Inkster, 2010

The following summaries review just some of the research trials conducted at Inkster during summer 2010. We hope you will enjoy this set and that you will look forward to other research summaries in upcoming Valley Potato Grower editions highlightingadditional research efforts by the potato improvement team at NDSU. A primary objective of the North Dakota State University (NDSU) potato breeding program is the breeding, selection, evaluation, development, and release of chipping potato cultivars possessing cold-sweetening resistance, improved chip processing quality, and with high yield potential. Since 2001, we have placed greater emphasis on incorporation of multiple resistance traits to important disease, insect pest and environmental stresses, such as Colorado potato beetle, aphids and viruses, late blight, silver scurf, pink rot and Pythium leak, Verticillium wilt, and cold-sweetening and a much greater emphasis on long-term storage potential for chip and frozen processing cultivars. These efforts generate opportunities to enhance economic and environmental sustainability by potato producers and the chip industry, and the potential for superior quality products for consumers.
