The 2010 Seed Potato Crop In North Dakota

During the writing of this column the seed potato harvest is winding down. In the spring of 2010 planting was early and went smoothly until the rain hit delaying the remainder of the planting. The growing season had plenty of moisture resulting in some crop loss in low spot. However, the moisture was beneficial in the higher areas. The crop in general is said to be a good yield of good quality. The acreage lost to surplus water was only a few hundred acres. The rainy season actually was more a blessing than a problem other than those few hundred low lying acres. In general cool summers favor tuber growth. The harvesting has been intermittent but progressed quite well when the rain stopped. Bacterial and fungal problems are said not to be apparent in great numbers and virus content of the crop will be determined in the month of January of 2011.
