UPGA and PMANA Urge Growers to Cut Acreage to Avoid Price Disaster

We have recently received communications from both the United Potato Growers of America and the Potato Marketing Association of America with similar messages. United is warning fresh growers that higher inventories in 2009 will reverse the trend of four consecutive years of profitability, and PMANA warns process growers: Do not plant without a contract. Dr. Joseph Guenthner, Professor of Ag Economics at the University of Idaho says, "If growers revert back to traditional behavior of reacting to previous season prices instead of producing to meet demand for the season when their crop will be marketed, acreage will increase to levels that will guarantee significant losses for all potato growers."
