WHILE much of TTCs coverage looks at the driving of tunnels for various applications, an equally important part of supplying' a finished tunnel to the owner involves completing and equipping the product'. The first of the tunnels for which this system was employed was the Botlek tunnel on the Betuweroute heavy-freight railway across the southern Netherlands (World Tunnelling March 2003, pp 52-56). Botlek, the country's first bored rail tunnel, is in the heavily industrialised port area south of Rotterdam. The twin tunnel formed part of the new freight railway across the country; this section carries the line under the OudeMaas river. The tunnel was driven at 9.45 m o.d. with a bolted segmental lining bringing the i.d. down to 8.65 m. Each tunnel section stretched 1,835m.
