摘要

As Delhi's population exceeds the 15 million mark, the country's sewage treatment plants are feeling the strain. Can they pull back from an ever threatening environmental disaster or will they go under? INDIA is emerging as the second fastest developing economy in the world today. Its capital city, Delhi, has attracted a lot of opportunity seekers from all over India and the rest of the world over the past few years. With the highest income per capita in India, it is also attracting large foreign investments, with half of all the multi-national companies in the country headquartered in the city. Delhi's population has swelled by over 40 percent between 1991 and 1999 and now exceeds 15 million. With over 4 million vehicles, and 1.5 million medium to large industries, it can boast being a cosmopolitan developing city. It is also a great tourist attraction with a huge historical cultural heritage. Unfortunately, there are drawbacks and these developments are proving to be something short of a boon to the city's infrastructure. Growing urbanisation, improvements in living standards and exploding population are just some of the factors contributing to the city's sanitation and environmental degradation. The large quantities of sewage produced by this large populace is at present over 2,900 million l/day, whereas the total capacity of the sewage treatment plants in Delhi is 1,500 million l/day. The remaining 52 percent - 1,400 million l/day of untreated sewage - finds its way directly into the Yamuna River through the 19 major drains that carry sewage and industrial effluent from the city.
