Michelin announces 'communicating' tyre to improve tyre life and safety

In an effort to improve tyre management, as well as the operating efficiency of bus and truck fleets, Michelin Plc has developed what it calls a 'communicating' tyre. The technology was unveiled last month at the bus depot of Stagecoach in West Ham, London; Stagecoach is one of Britain's largest bus fleet operators and the West Ham depot is responsible for servicing the buses for the London Olympic Park. Jean-Claude Pats, managing director Michelin Trucks & Buses in Europe, at the unveiling explained the technology combines a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) - the sensor is mounted on the hub of the wheel - and a radio frequency identification chip (RFID) - embedded into the tyre - to enable tyre data to be read by an electronic hand-held reader within just seconds to give details such as tyre pressure, temperature, tyre type, and vehicle model and number. The reader also allows the technician to use an electronic tread gauge that sends the reading wirelessly to the electronic data sheet of the tyre.
