Bus fleet developments drive eco efficiency

Using new technology and encouraging drivers to go easier on the throttle can help bus companies consume less fuel and significantly reduce their carbon emissions. Transport operator Go-Ahead operates a fleet of nearly 5000 buses that consume a total of 120M litres of fuel each year, at a cost of around ￡70M. Six years ago the business made it a priority to reduce both its diesel consumption and CO_2 emissions through a combination of leadership, framing and new technology. An 'energy champion' was appointed for each of its bus businesses to spearhead CO_2 reduction and the champions became members of a Group Energy Forum, established in 2008. The Forum agreed on priorities and key performance indicators necessary to measure progress.
