All eyes on spring fund decisions: A new road improvements plan will be developed for Northern Ireland this year, once funding is confirmed

Spring 2012 will be an important time for the Northern Ireland Roads Service and its suppliers, when confirmation of the province's Programme for Government is expected. With it will come knowledge of the extent of funding available for Roads Service's construction programme for 2012 and the following two years. Road improvements in Northern Ireland are at a convenient juncture for decisions on investment. A number of major projects of previous spending periods have been completed and opened over the past 12 months. These include three schemes on the A1 and A4 as part of Roads Service's 'DBFO Package 2' delivered by the Amey Lagan Roads joint venture. The TV remains responsible for operating and maintaining 125km of Northern Ireland's road network for another 25 years under the design, build, finance and operate project. Now Roads Service is poised to launch a further phase of road improvements as soon as it knows how much it can do.
