The Highways Agency and local highway authorities are working more closely to manage their networks interactively and eke out more capacity from existing infrastructure. Anew form of strategic operation of road networks has entered the Highways Agency's (HA) project plans - Integrated Demand Management (IDM). This may sound grandiose, but IDM is simply a logical progression of road network strategy developing in the UK. It involves highway authorities working closely together to manage traffic flow on adjacent networks, not just to get the best out of existing infrastructure, but to facilitate developments whose planning consents are dependent on increased road capacity.
