Dr Andrew Murray is standing down as UK Roads Board chairman. Here he reflects on recent progress made in the highways sector and how austerity means local authorities will have to keep evolving. How to manage road networks in times of austerity has been one of the central challenges that has faced Andrew Murray in recent years, writes Justin Ward. Dr Murray is currently head of Transport NI and has been chairman of the UK Roads Board since June 2011, although his term in charge of the board is due to end soon. At his first UK Roads Board meeting as chairman Andrew said that he was keen to ensure the work carried out by the group was relevant to the current environment, was focused and useful.
