Fundamental change has been applied to the way potholes are treated in Walsall - resulting in greater productivity and big cost savings. Walsall Council highway managers have budgeted for delivery of a pothole repair service in 2011/12 equal in quantity to the previous financial year but costing ￡400,000 less. This follows a complete appraisal and shake up of the way carriageway defects are treated in Walsall. In 2009 the proportion of pothole repairs failing within one year was reported at 84%. This led Walsall and its newly appointed highways maintenance contractor Tarmac National Contracting to set out on a fresh start. A 'back to basics' approach was initiated, evaluating the whole process from carriageway inspection to pothole filling and invoicing.
