In this paper, Prof. Ted Keith and his students introduce the complex world of squeeze film dampers and describe their research facility aimed at improving our understanding of these devices. Squeeze film dampers are essentially flexible mounts which hold rolling element bearings on high speed shafts. Under certain conditions where dynamic motions are high (orbits) these mounts allow extra but controlled shaft motion which, in turn, adds damping and stability. They've become uniquitous in gas turbines but are still as much of an art as a science. I expect we'll see more papers on this interesting subject in future issues.
