Sliding Friction Behaviour of Ceramic-Polymer Contacts under High Speed Conditions

In this publication the behaviour of ceramic-polymer-contacts under high speed conditions without lubrication are investigated. Some previous publications describe the occurrence of melt-lubrication at sliding speeds of 40 m/s and higher which can lead to a friction coefficient less than 0.05. In contrast to this other experimental studies could not confirm the appearance of this effect. To examine the complex interaction of the wear mechanism under high-dynamic conditions, a test rig was developed. This test rig can realize sliding speeds up to 20 m/s (50,000 rpm) with a force up to 5 N. The contact pairings presented in this publication consist of rotating polymer cylinders -φ 8mm - and a ceramic ball - φ 4.762mm - made of silicium nitride (Si_3N_4). Depending on the contact pairing and the energy input onto the surface it could be observed, that distinctive wear occurs on the polymer cylinder.
