In this paper; studies were made on the grinding performance of the various types of carboxylic acids that are widely used as oiliness agents, from the following three viewpoints. 1) comparison among number of carbon atoms of straight chain saturated fatty acids, 2) comparison between saturated and unsaturated acids, and 3) comparison between structural isomerism (normal structure and branched structure). As a result, it was found that among carboxylic acids tested straight chain saturated higher fatty acids with the carbon atom number beyond lauric acid (C12) or above were the best in grinding performance. To explore reasons behind these findings, the surface pressure of adsorbed monomolecular films of typical carboxylic acids were measured by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method to show that the grinding performance depends on surface pressure of adsorbed monomolecular film. Further, the surface of the workpieces tested were observed by SEM to evaluate their surface quality. Finally, cylindrical grinding operation tests were done to evaluate the correlation between the experimental results for the Block-on-Ring grinding method and for a cylindrical grinding operation.
