The most important thing you should know about companion animal hospitals of the future — say those providing service in 2013 or thereabouts — is that the small animal veterinary practice as we know it will be in a state of flux. Why will this happen? Experts cite two key reasons. Reason one: too few veterinary school graduates for too many positions. The U.S. Department of Labor projects an increase of 22,000 jobs for veterinarians between 2006 and 2016. With an annual output of fewer than 3,000 graduates, America's 28 veterinary schools can't keep pace with demand.
