1. Psoriasis affects about 2 per cent of the population in the UK. There is a genetic predisposition, and other factors, such as a recent streptococcal infection, drugs including lithium, beta-blockers and antimalarials, or stress, may precipitate or exacerbate the condition.2. HIV infection may cause a deterioration or precipitation of psoriasis.3. Psoriasis produces erythematous plaques with a silvery scale in a symmetrical distribution predominantly on extensor surfaces, particularly of the elbows and knees. The scalp may be involved and nails may have pits or show onycholysis.
