Antifungal Activity of Plant Extracts on Uredospores Germination of Leaf Rust of Wheat

The leaf rust caused by Puccinia recondita Rob. Ex. Desm. f. sp. tritici is the most important fungal disease of wheat which inflicting heavy losses in different parts of the country. The use of allelopathic plant extracts as biological control agentsis being popularized in recent years. An unsterilized extracts of twenty plants belonging to different families with 50,20 and 10 per cent concentration of each plant species were evaluate to control uredospore germination of P. recondita f.sp. triticicausing leaf rust of wheat. Out of all plant extracts, maximum per cent inhibition of uredospores germination observed in garlic (Allium sativum) bulb extract. Onion (Allium cepa) bulb extract was next best for inhibition of uredospores germination followed by ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome and datura (Datura stramonium) leaf extract. Among the different concentration, garlic (Allium sativum) bulb extract at 50 per cent concentration showed maximum inhibition of uredospores germination which was at par with onion (Allium cepa) bulb extract at same concentration. Barmasi leaf extract found least inhibitory to the uredospores germination at all concentrations tried.
