The fatty oils may have significantly higher solubility in the aqueous solution of ammonia compared to that of ammonia-free water and could be forming a second liquid phase within the base of the distillation tower.The direct contact of a free oil phase with the hot tubes may be causing thermal degradation fouling.Without removing the oils,you could increase the size of the exchanger and lower the temperature of the hot oil to reduce thermal degradation.However,removal of the oil may be more advantageous.
